Elon Welcomes Butterfly Lady in First Triad Appearance
Traveling
an hour west of her home base last Thursday,
August 6, Suzanne Tilton worked
Butterfly Lady magic at the
Elon Community Church Farmers’ Market, in
Elon, North Carolina. This was her first appearance in North Carolina’s
so-called Triad, the piedmont region in and around High Point, Greensboro
and Winston-Salem.
Market-goers
of all ages enjoyed observing and learning about Monarch (Danaus plexippus)
eggs, caterpillars, chrysalises and adult butterflies, along with other
species. Suzanne helped kids and adults hold caterpillars and feel their
tickly feet as they inched across extended palms. A lucky few got to gently
hold adult, North Carolina-native butterflies before releasing them when
Butterfly Lady counted down to the exciting moment. As butterflies skittered
above the church lawn to freedom, exuberant children mirrored their flight
and ran giggling in hot pursuit. Oh, the simply joys of a summer afternoon!
They can yet be found in quiet, peaceful places like Elon, North Carolina.
